People have stared at me in disbelief most times when I tell them about my unusual whimsical childhood. At least, though, they are usually intrigued.
I learned how to walk, read, write, and use my imagination in a gulch on an old gold mining claim called the Harlequin Claim in the Tobacco Root Mountain range in Montana. No electricity. No running water except for the ice-cold creek falling down the mountain outside of our cabin. I panned for gold a little bit as a girl, just for fun. I ended up finding a few flecks, but there was never enough to sell. Just the same, I loved finding the glitter in the creek-bed!
I started playing the fiddle when my family moved away from the mountains and settled in closer to town at age 14. That brought me eventually to Nashville, Tennessee where I have played in a few touring bands, recorded in the studio and taught fiddle lessons.
Which is where I have landed for now – teaching fiddle and mandolin lessons. I love it. My husband is a musician as well. He travels the majority of the year, and loves his job, too. The man is a gem. When anyone says “lucky girl”, they are talking about me, whether they know it or not. The times that we are together are my favorite times ever. We fill our days with food, wine, laughter and love, and the time we have apart leaves me plenty of time to mull over life; to find and enjoy the bits of sparkle that are in my life. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? It’s not always. We do live in the real world. But why dwell on the melancholy? I suppose you could say I’m still panning for gold. And the glitter is so there. Usually it involves food and people I love. So, I’m saving it up now, and by the time my body is old and I am ready to move on to streets made of it, what I aim to see when I look back is a big old gold nugget! Welcome to the practice of panning for gold.
